Whitley County Council Approves Funding for Various Projects
The Whitley County Council convened on October 8, 2023, for their regular meeting, where they addressed various agenda items, including budget approvals, appointments and appropriations.
The council unanimously approved both the county budget and the solid waste budget for the upcoming year.
The council also approved a salary ordinance.
Council member Thor Hodges motioned for approval, and John Barrett seconded the motion.
Andy Boxburger, representing the Churubusco EDC, requested the appointment of a council member to a newly formed Economic Development Commission (EDC).
The EDC is being created to issue a bond for a new residential development in Churubusco. The loan from the Indiana Finance Authority, secured through this bond, will be used to fund infrastructure improvements in the Turtle Meadows development. The developer will bear all liability for the loan.
Council member Tom Warner nominated Miles Wilson, owner of Sheets and Childs Children Home Service, for the EDC position. Wilson is actively involved in various Churubusco downtown projects. The council unanimously approved his appointment.
The council approved a $1,500 appropriation to the educational health fund. The funds, originating from a grant awarded by the Old Settlers Association, will support suicide prevention training and materials.
The council approved a $303,000 appropriation to cover the county’s portion of radio installations in the new jail.
County Auditor Cindy Doolittle requested approval to pay a $313 garnishment order that was mistakenly sent to an out-of-state attorney. Doolittle has been trying to recover the funds for ten months. The council voted to approve the payment.
The Whitley County Highway Department presented a proposal for new equipment purchases, highlighting the need for a fleet rotation schedule due to aging vehicles and rising prices.
The council agreed to allow director Ryan Getts to gather more quotes and present final figures at a later meeting. They also suggested exploring the feasibility of purchasing used vehicles to potentially save money.
The council approved a regional sewer agreement previously approved by the commissioners. The agreement allocates $1 million for the Churubusco area’s regional Water and Sewer District.
The council approved the 2025 meeting schedule.
Public comment was offered by Christopher Morgan, the new owner of Blue Eagle Towing.
Thor Hodges also inquired about updates on county internet initiatives.
