Whitley County Consolidated Schools announced their plans for school during the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Here is their official statement:
“Dear WCCS Families,
Whitley County Consolidated Schools has made the decision to implement an eLearning day on Monday, April 8, 2024, in light of the upcoming Solar Eclipse.
The decision was made with the safety and well-being of our students as our top priority.
There are several reasons that led us to this decision. Firstly, Whitley County Emergency Management, Columbia City Police Department, and Whitley County Sheriff’s Department have all expressed their concerns about the potential for traffic issues during our dismissal time.
Secondly, we want to ensure that all students have the opportunity to witness this rare celestial event safely. By holding an eLearning day, students will have the flexibility to view the Solar Eclipse from the comfort and safety of their homes, under the supervision of their parents or guardians.
In addition, we are aware that there are many planned absences on this day. Implementing an eLearning day ensures that all students can continue their learning in a structured and supervised manner, even in the absence of regular in-person classes.
As part of this eLearning day, elementary students will be bringing home their devices over spring break so that they can participate in the planned activities on Monday, April 8th. We believe that providing access to these devices at home will facilitate a smooth transition to the eLearning day and enable students to engage effectively with the educational resources and assignments related to the Solar Eclipse.
We understand that some parents may have reservations about their children having devices over the break. If you prefer your child not to have the device during this time, you can simply put it away in a secure place and retrieve it for the eLearning day on April 8th.
Rest assured that teachers will provide guidance and support to ensure that all students are prepared for the eLearning activities. Teachers will be sending home additional information about the Solar Eclipse and eLearning expectations for April 8th. This will include detailed instructions for accessing online resources, completing assignments, and making the most of this unique educational opportunity.
If your child participates in athletics, his/her coach will provide updated information regarding practices, and/ or games for the 8th. Please watch the normal communication channels for this information.
Thank you for your cooperation and support as we strive to provide engaging and meaningful learning experiences for our students.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your child’s school.
Sincerely, Dr. Laura McDermott”
